Rescuing Victims of Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is one of the worst human rights violations in our time. This has become one of the major illegal businesses in today’s world. Humans are trafficked for variety of reasons, such as prostitution, forced labour. It is mostly the socially marginalized and poorest women and children who are at the risk of human trafficking.

Trafficking is different from smuggling. People are being smuggled at their will, for a fee. After arriving at the smuggled destination they are free to go on their own way.

Yet the people who are being trafficked are not free to make decisions about their lives. Trafficked victims are pressured to live a life they don’t agree on as they don’t have an option. They are compelled to live and work in highly exploitive circumstances for no or very little monetary compensation.

It is extremely dangerous and risky work to address human trafficking as it is well organized under-world activity. As addressing trafficking issues are life threatening, most activists opt not to work on trafficking issues. Situation and issues of human trafficking is under-studied and under-reported.

It is the duty of the state and human rights activists to find reliable and sustainable solutions to rescue victims of human trafficking.
